Qualities and Skills We're Looking For

Our clients place a high value on experience working with entertainers and related professionals, so we prefer to hire athletic trainers familiar with the arts & entertainment industry.  We understand that this type of experience may be hard to come by, especially for athletic training students, so we are working diligently with Behind the Scenes Medical Consulting and our arts medicine colleagues across the country to create more opportunities for athletic trainers in arts & entertainment through new jobs, residencies, fellowships, internships, and clinical rotations.

Each time we hire a new athletic trainer, we select a candidate based on our client's specific needs.  While each new athletic training position may seek slightly different qualifications and skills, there are a core group of qualities and abilities that athletic trainer candidates must possess in order to be selected for any of our positions:
Manual Therapy Skills & Knowledge
Working in entertainment can significantly restrict the number and type of modalities available.  As a result, the ATs we hire must be highly skilled in a variety of manual therapy techniques and must utilize these techniques as the cornerstone of their treatments.  Training can be formal (with certification) or informal (attending workshops, learning in a clinical setting).  The important things we’re looking for are that candidates (a) understand how and when to implement a variety of techniques and (b) apply manual therapy techniques correctly and in appropriate situations.  We prefer to hire ATs who are comfortable using manual therapies for the vast majority of their treatments on a daily basis, especially for our touring positions.

Commitment to Continuing Education
We want professionals who actively participate in relevant continuing education activities.  We’re looking for ATs who demonstrate that they are continually improving their knowledge and skills, particularly in areas relevant to working in entertainment.

Proven Ability to Work Independently
When we're reviewing profiles and resumes to fill an open position, we want to see that the AT can manage all aspects of patient care and sports medicine facility management on their own, such as:
  • acute injury response and management
  • injury evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation
  • emergency response planning, rehearsal, and execution
  • clear, frequent, and professional communication with patients and professionals from a variety of fields, such as coaches or artistic directors, medical/athletics/arts administrators, supervisors, fellow medical professionals, and other support staff
  • ordering supplies and ensuring equipment is properly maintained
  • correctly completing medical and legal documentation and other administrative tasks in a timely manner

Specifically, our touring ATs must be able to work entirely on their own.  Successful applicants for these positions have recent and frequent work experience demonstrating these capabilities.
